Christmas in Cornwall
Christmas is a special time of year in Cornwall, where frost-capped coast paths make for breath taking walks, quiet beaches are the backdrop for golden-hued sunsets and warming treats are always on the menu! Whilst we can’t promise snow, there is still so much to enjoy…
It may not be quite the same for us all this year, but Christmas in Cornwall will still be as magical as ever. So, if you’re thinking of a Christmas or New Year break, here’s a few of our favourite reasons as to why Cornwall is the perfect place to celebrate this yuletide.
There’s nothing quite like an invigorating stroll along miles of Cornish beach or rugged coast path with the Atlantic ocean by your side as you take in the crisp sea air! Even better is warming up with a delicious hot chocolate (or hot toddy!) in a café by the coast. We recommend the Extreme Hot Chocolate at the Beach Hut, Watergate Bay where you can still enjoy the sweeping beach views while thawing out.
Brave the winter waters with a Boxing Day or New Year dip in the ocean… wetsuits not welcome! Check online for safety regulations before taking part, or wrap up warm and watch as others take the plunge. There is usually a Christmas Day dip at Trevaunance Cove in St Agnes and a Boxing Day dip at Perranporth, however these swims may not take place, or may do so differently, this year due to Covid-19 restrictions. Please check the guidance and information nearer the time.
An annual festive favourite in Cornwall is Ice Skating at the Eden Project, and this year is no different. The ice rink is open, with all the guidelines in place for you and your family to enjoy safely. Find more details here
Take a stroll through the cobbled streets of quintessential Cornish villages and harbours for a feeling of a traditional Christmas. Although many larger displays sadly aren’t happening for safety reasons, you’ll still find sparkling lights from festive shop windows and the welcoming glow from a yuletide decked pub.
Speaking of Cornish pubs, tuck into the finest seasonal fayre with festive twists and the best of Cornwall’s food served up. Try the Driftwood Spars at Trevaunance Cove for an atmospheric traditional seaside pub with open fires and homemade food. Or book for a special treat at one of Cornwall’s renowned hotels such as The Alverton in Truro for a lunch menu full of flavour and festive flair.
For more of nature’s winter wonder, try a leaf-lined woodland walk around one of Cornwall’s famous woods and gardens. Visit Tehidy Woods for a gentle stroll, opportunities to feed the squirrels and swans, and a warming cup of tea in the café afterwards. Cardinham Woods is a large and diverse woodland near Bodmin great for cycling and mountain biking, family walks, and quiet reflection in peaceful glades.
There are several historic National Trust houses and stunning gardens in Cornwall, which offer magical Christmas experiences. This year may operate a little differently, but if the properties are open then booking a time allocated visit is well worth it. Try Trelissick for their annual Christmas tree festival, with beautifully decorated trees in each room, and dark evening walks through the garden, lit by twinkling festive lights.
Top all this off with some well-deserved quality time in a cosy holiday home from home. Celebrate a well-deserved Christmas break by curling up in front of the log burner with a feel-good Christmas film, baking festive treats, or sitting back to wave watch from one of our gorgeous sea view properties.
