Why choose Cornwall for your staycation

According to a report in trade newspaper Travel Weekly, as many as 57% of us will be taking their annual summer holiday in the UK this year, a rise of 2% on 2017. And top of the destination wishlist? Well Cornwall, of course.

If you’re in any doubt at all that Cornwall is the ideal destination for a ‘holiday at home’, then check out these top five reasons why you should choose Cornwall for a Staycation.

1. Cornwall Has the Best Beaches

While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, few people will argue with us when we say Cornwall has the best beaches. We have miles and miles of glorious sandy beaches, from the surf-swept stretches of golden wonder on the north coast to the sheltered rocky coves of twinkling tranquility on the south. If you’re new to Cornwall, then look no further than Perranporth.  Our local beach is an absolute gem – it’s three miles of golden sand backed by sand dunes and soaring cliffs. Or for something completely different, there’s nearby St Agnes and the rugged splendour of Trevaunance Cove.

Also in this amazing area is Holywell Bay – a sandy bay with distinctive offshore islands – which is a regular backdrop in TV programmes, including Poldark. Just up the coast near Newquay is spectacular Crantock Beach with its high dunes, caves and Gannel Estuary which snakes up the valley and forms a nice, flat swimming area at high tide.

2. Cornwall is Great for Family Attractions

Cornwall is officially the UK’s number one holiday destination and it’s easy to see why. There is so much going here. We may not be able to guarantee the wall-to-wall sunshine of other European hotspots (although we’ve been doing very well recently) but if it is a little cool or wet for the beach, there are loads of things to see and do all over the county. From scenic, seaside towns and villages to world class attractions such as the Eden Project, there is plenty to explore and enjoy. Our local favourites include Lappa Valley Steam Railway and Newquay Zoo.

3. Cornwall has Jaw Dropping Scenery

In an age when we’re bombarded by glossy images of tropical beaches and awe inspiring landscapes from around the world, it’s easy to forget that we have some stunning scenery to explore right here in the UK. If you’ve seen our Instagram feed recently, you will have seen some examples of the wonderful coastal scenery that makes our own small corner of the world so special. To see it at its best, take a stroll along the beach and over the headland to Holywell Bay, or along the rugged coast path to St Agnes. You’ll soon discover Cornwall’s unspoilt, spectacular beauty.

4. Cornwall is a Top Foodie Destination

Cornwall will forever be synonymous with Cornish Pasties and Cream Teas. But in recent years, Cornwall has become one of the UK’s top destinations for quality food and drink. Famous chefs Rick Stein, Jamie Oliver, Nathan Outlaw and Paul Ainsworth all have restaurants on Cornwall’s north shore. We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out in Perranporth and the surrounding area, with many great gastro pubs, bistros and cafés, including The Tywarnhayle and the Seiners Arms overlooking the beach.

Recent additions include the super cool Alcatraz bar and cafe, built on the site of a former  World War II gun store, with stunning sea views just yards from the sand. Right next door is the Summer House, which serves seasonal dishes and tapas using local meats and fish, in this smart restaurant overlooking the surf. Also new in town in the Healey’s Cider shop and drink hut in the freshly renovated Red House.

5. Cornwall has a Wide Choice of Quality Holiday Accommodation

Tourism is a key industry in Cornwall and holidaymakers enjoy a fantastic choice of places to stay. There are posh hotels, laid-back B&Bs and cool campsites where you can rest your weary head on a well-earned break.
